Caption on a Photograph

Keye Luke
reminds me about you
when I see him
on Sundays
during Charlie Chan
when I force myself
to watch

He reminds me
of our maps
He traces West Lake Drive
across the Martian Sea
He points to the
Grand Canal
and says
You are there

West Lake Drive is the road around Lake Springfield. It was the road to Alison Gaughan's family home on Greencastle Drive. Also one of Alison's poems, Going 40 Over the Bridge, is set on this road. We drove it together many times. The Grand Canal references Lowell's theory that there were canals on Mars that had been built by another civilization. Part of the metaphor, here.

I am fairly certain, father dear, that your waters run deeper than mind. Not sure this is complimentary since deep waters run still and all that, but it's probably true-- most of your poems require at least a double reading for me to think I understand, and even then I'm not really sure. I suppose part of the responsibility of readership is the willingness to risk getting things wrong; this is especially embarrassing in college, where everyone thinks it's important to know everything.

Proper nouns make my brain shut down and I don't know why. I think it's because I immediately take it for granted that I have no idea what it is, especially in poems written pre- my existence. THIS IS A HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS. Especially when reading "the classics," via the 18 or 1900's. The thing is that if my brain didn't shut down and I actually thought about it, I'd probably figure out what exactly it is-- otherwise, it just means I look at phrases like the "Martian Sea" and think "I didn't know we had a sea in Illinois."

See, you think I'm smart. This is how Paige *actually* thinks.
